Shakir Mohammad is a traditional weaver of Chanderi. 56 years old Shakir has started weaving when he was just 16 and started supporting his family. He became a skilled artist at very young age and been known as one of the best weavers. Without replacing the traditional weaving pattern, in 1973 he created a very popular design ‘Mehndi Rache Hath” which emerged as a new attraction in chanderi weaving. This creation was so light weight and finished that it looked like it has been printed and not weaved. Since last 40 years he has been weaving this saree and has been awarded in 2005-06 by state government and state craft council.
In chanderi weaving ‘Mehndi rache hath’ has its own place. Its specification lies in the border as there is a motif with Mehndi on its hand. Designs of this are being made with iknalya jacquard machine and do naliya jungla designs with sticks. Shakir was an expert in ‘Iknalya’ weaving. This saree has been considered sacred & is being worn in auspicious ceremonies.
